New FIAP Event with Photojournalist Byron Smith

On 19 June 2025, at 19:30 – Our International Relations Group invited Byron Smith to İFSAK as a guest. We watched his photo presentation titled “Focal Points: Navigating Narratives through Photographs” and then had a conversation with him. As a photographer who takes photos in hot conflict and migration areas, we held an interactive event in the form of question/answer about the wars and conflicts currently happening in the world. We invited all our members, photography and art lovers to our event. A large audience showed interest in our event. After event he signed his book.

Focal Points: Navigating Narratives through Photographs Byron Smith traces a transformative journey from local newspapers to global conflict zones, revealing how each photograph is a deliberate act of choosing what to see, what to reveal, and what profound human story lies beneath the surface. Through a series of powerful images spanning from New York City to Brazil, Greece, Mosul, Sudan and Ukraine, Smith deconstructs the art of visual storytelling—demonstrating how a photographer’s focal point is not just about technical precision, but about bearing witness, challenging perspectives, and creating a deeper, more nuanced understanding of our interconnected human experience.

Byron Smith (born:1986, USA) is an internationally recognized award-winning photographer whose work aims to capture the raw essence of conflict and migration, hoping to show these stories' echoing impact on the world. He has covered stories from conflict zones, including Iraq, Sudan, and Ukraine, to the shifting political landscapes of Northern Ireland, Kazakhstan, and at home in the United States. His work has been exhibited in major cities in the US, such as New York City, Washington, D.C., and Chicago, and it extends internationally to the UK, Germany, Italy, Greece, Hungary, and Finland. His work is widely published in The New York Times and for CNN, The Wall Street Journal, Getty Images, Le Monde, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, and VICE Magazine. He is currently a part of the VII Mentorship Program’s 2023-’24 cohort.
