“The Cement Train”

At the end of 2019, I arrived in India for the first time. For months I had thought about what I would find and how I would approach this country I was determined to photograph. But to my surprise, from the very first moment, this country enveloped me.
My exhibition, “The Cement Train,” tells the story of a place, a space in one of India's most important cities: Agra, where fate had taken me by chance. It was where we stopped the vehicle that was transporting us, and where I discovered a group of people who worked there.
I entered accompanied by my husband, just the two of us. There we were, them and us.
These people worked at a freight depot, a train station, where dust, dirt, sweat, and chaos abounded.
Their job was to load and unload the sacks of cement that continually arrive at that station. They unload these materials like pack animals, with nothing to protect them, no adequate clothing, no footwear, and no minimum safety standards. Only their effort and daily labor, for which they earn just 50 rupees (less than a euro a day), from dawn to dusk, are of value.
Entering this place was a humbling experience for me. Nothing was planned, everything was spontaneous. A woman in a place where there were only men, a woman with a camera in her hand, and THEM. They let me, with my camera, capture their sadness, their tiredness, and... their smile.
This exhibition tells a story, a moment, and a thank you to all those who, despite everything, smile...

President of the Miradas de Ceuta Photography Association from its creation in 2016 until 2024. National Award from the Spanish Confederation of Photography (CEF) for the best blog of 2017. Director of the FIAP Exhibition Center, Revellín Auditorium Theater, City of Ceuta from 2019 until 2024. Member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Confederation of Photography (CEF) from 2017 to 2024, being Head of the Youth Department. Collaborator in the organization of the Chefchaouen International Photography Festival (Morocco) in 2016 and 2017. She has received various awards, including the PSA Gold Medal at the SKP Photogenic 2024 International Circuit. She has participated in numerous solo exhibitions and Collective works Author of the blog "fotogramadecoloresblog.com" Jury member in countless national competitions.

“El tren del cemento”
A finales del año 2019, llegué a India por primera vez, durante meses había pensado en lo que me iba a encontrar y como iba a poder afrontar ese país al que estaba dispuesta a fotografiar. Pero cual fue mi sorpresa, que desde el primer momento, ese país me envolvió.
Mi exposición “ El Tren del cemento”, narra la historia de un lugar, de un espacio en una de las ciudades más importantes de India: Agra, donde el destino me llevó por casualidad, donde paramos el vehículo que nos transportaba y donde descubrí, a un grupo de personas que trabajaban en aquel lugar.
Entré acompañada de mi marido, solo los dos, allí estábamos ellos y nosotros.
Estas personas, trabajaban en una estación de mercancías, una estación de tren, donde abundaba el polvo, la suciedad, el sudor y el caos.
Su trabajo consistíaen cargar y descargar los sacos de cemento que continuamente llegan a esa estación. Descargan esos materiales como animales de carga, sin nada que les proteja, sin ropa adecuada, sin calzado, sin mínimas condiciones de seguridad. Sólo vale su esfuerzo y la realización del trabajo diario por el que cobran apenas 50 rupias ( menos de un euro al día) y desde que amanece hasta que se pone el sol.
Adentrarnos en este lugar fue para mí, toda una experiencia de humildad, nada estaba programado y todo fue espontáneo. Una mujer en un lugar donde sólo había hombres, una mujer con una cámara fotográfica en la mano y ELLOS. Ellos que me dejaron que con mi cámara, plasmara su tristeza, su cansancio y .... Su sonrisa.
Esta exposición cuenta una historia, un momento y un agradecimiento a todos aquellos que a pesar de todo, sonríen... Africa Márquez.
