ETHIOPIA, REAL ESTATE ORTHODOXY

The present project is located in the northern part of Ethiopia, from Addis Ababa to Axum, the territory where the practice of Orthodox religion finds its greatest expression has in Africa. The different nuances that mix poverty, religiosity and fatalism converge in this project carried out on different trips to the area between 2013 and 2018. A town that combines fasting and poverty in the same proportions becomes inaccessible to their conquest and they know it, as they It demonstrates the fact that no one ever invaded them.
Throughout these trips we have tried to explore and know more closely, and from coexistence, what meaning they give to their lives, and what is the idea that dominates their thoughts and pushes them forward, in an impossible survival, without the minimal material means of the third world. We have only been able to find a connecting thread between so much misery and so much acceptance, a religiosity that permeates every act, every thought, that drives them to that stubborn resistance.
Its poverty is parallel in dimension to its religiosity, its absolute, total and irrevocable fidelity to the Tewahedo Orthodox Church, the only one that retains its original essence, unalterable over time and any civilization, and practiced by populations of Amara origin.
From that vision of strict religiosity, we approach the project with the intention of offering a reliable vision of that spirit of millenary faith, never discussed, prevailing, as an exclusive way of a life form inherited and transmitted from generation to generation.

His photographic work is developed between social and human reporting and portraiture. His photographs have the virtue of removing our feelings, because of the simplicity of the composition and the emotional load they convey.
He has worked on photographic projects in India, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Gambia, Senegal, Cuba, among other countries. He has exhibited his works throughout the national geography in fifty individual and collective exhibitions.

El presente proyecto está ubicado en la zona norte de Etiopía, desde Addis Abeba hasta Axum, el territorio donde la práctica de la religión ortodoxa encuentra su mayor expresión tiene en África. Los diferentes matices que mezclan pobreza, religiosidad y fatalismo confluyen en este proyecto realizado en diferentes viajes a la zona entre 2013 y 2018. Un pueblo que combina en las mismas proporciones ayuno y pobreza se hace inaccesible a su conquista y ellos lo saben, como lo demuestra el hecho de que nunca nadie les invadió.
A lo largo de estos viajes hemos procurado explorar y conocer de forma más cercana, y desde la convivencia, qué sentido dan a sus vidas, y cuál es la idea qué domina sus pensamientos y los empuja hacia adelante, en una supervivencia imposible, sin los mínimos medios materiales del tercer mundo. Sólo hemos podido encontrar un hilo de conexión entre tanta miseria y tanta aceptación, una religiosidad que impregna cada acto, cada pensamiento, que los impulsa a esa tenaz resistencia.
Su pobreza es paralela en dimensión a su religiosidad, a su absoluta, total e irrenunciable fidelidad a la iglesia ortodoxa Tewahedo, la única que conserva su esencia primigenia, inalterable al paso del tiempo y a cualquier civilización, y practicada por las poblaciones de origen amara.
Desde esa visión de estricta religiosidad, abordamos el proyecto con la intención de ofrecer una visión fidedigna de ese espíritu de fe milenaria, jamás discutida, imperante, como camino exclusivo de una forma de vida heredada y transmitida de generación en generación.
MANUEL VIOLA FIGUERAS Premio Nacional de Fotografía 2019 de la CEF (Confederación española de Fotografía) al Mejor Fotógrafo. Su trabajo fotográfico se desarrolla entre el reportaje social y humano y el retrato. Sus fotografías tienen la virtud de remover nuestros sentimientos, por la sencillez de la composición y la carga emocional que transmiten.
Ha trabajado en proyectos fotográficos en India, Myanmar, Etiopía, Gambia, Senegal, Cuba, entre otros países. Ha expuesto sus obras por toda la geografía nacional en medio centenar de exposiciones individuales y colectivas.
